First decide if remote monitoring is desired and through which device. Secondly, check the monitoring- and connectivity options of your installation’s building blocks and decide which features are required.

Decide on remote monitoring
Do you need remote monitoring, now or later? If local checks are enough, skip to step 2.
If yes, add a communication device and connect it to the internet.
For a smaller system that only needs monitoring, the GlobalLink is usually the right choice, with cellular connectivity included. For a larger installation with the need for managed batteries, remote control and firmware updates, tank and temperature sensors, third party integrations or MFDs, choose a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX. An inverter or charger with a GX built in sits in between, fewer connectivity options, but a more compact setup.

Product connectivity
After the system's design has been created, it’s time to decide on the monitoring and connectivity specifications of your system’s building blocks. Generally, look for Smart products if local monitoring with VictronConnect is sufficient. For remote monitoring, ensure the product can be connected to the communication device of choice through one of the following options.

Smart products are equipped with Bluetooth, and therefore work with VictronConnect for local monitoring and firmware/settings updates. Remote monitoring can be enabled in most cases, as smart products often feature a communication port (but not always).Products with a VE.Direct port that aren’t ‘smart’ yet, can either be upgraded with a VE.Direct Bluetooth dongle, OR they can be wired to a GX-device or GlobalLink to enable remote connectivity. VictronConnect-Remote and VRM let you access the products from remote and when you are standing right by them, provided your phone and your system have an active internet connection.Products with a VE.Bus port, generally Victron inverters or inverter/chargers are wired to a GX-device through a cable to enable real-time remote connectivity. Alternatively a VE.Bus Smart dongle adds local Bluetooth connectivity through VictronConnect. See also ‘advanced settings’.Products with VE.Can, such as third party managed batteries, or multiple daisy chained MPPTs, can share their individual data to the wider system.
